Last summer, I had an opportunity to tutor Sabah, a fourteen year old Syrian refugee who needed help getting her learners permit. Although I was not old enough to drive myself, I had an exciting time helping her learn all about driving in the US! We met virtually every Sunday evening to study for the test that she needed to pass to obtain her learners permit. I shared a variety of resources that she could study in her free time and I helped her to identify locations where she could take the test online. We reviewed road signs and signals, traffic rules, safe driving practices and emergency situations and laws. We even practiced driving simulations online which was really fun! For refugees new to America, receiving a drivers license is incredibly important to getting integrated into the new culture.
